Dr Peter Sowerby

Dr Peter Sowerby co-founded Egton Medical Information Systems Limited (EMIS) with fellow GP Dr David Stables, in 1987. The two GPs had written the software for an electronic medical record system for use by GPs whilst working at Egton Surgery in Egton near Whitby, North Yorkshire. The resulting company, EMIS has grown over more than twenty years to be the largest supplier of clinical information systems to General Practitioners in the UK. As at June 2012, EMIS supplied systems to 52.2% of GP practices in the UK.

In 2011, the Peter Sowerby Foundation was established by Dr Peter Sowerby as a charitable trust to direct his personal wealth to meet his charitable objectives, and those of his late wife Ann. The Foundation was first registered as a charity with the Charity Commission in January 2011.

In April 2013, the Foundation was incorporated as a company limited by guarantee (company no. 08492424), which was registered with the Charity Commission in May 2013 (charity no. 1151978).
